Kanha National ParkKanha National Park is one of the finest and richest (in flora and fauna) National Parks of India. Located in the Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh, Kanha National Park is known for its exceptional natural beauty and the unique and diverse flora and fauna. The immense natural beauty of Kanha even inspired the famous author Rudyard Kipling to write his all time classic Jungle Book. Beautifully surrounded by a horseshoe shaped valley and the spurs of the Mekal ridge, the park covers an area of approximately 1,945 sq km, comprising of highly undulating topography with elevations ranging between 450 to 900 meters above sea level. The Surpan River, which meanders through central part of Kanha, is the lifeline of the park and provides a permanent source of water for rich and varied flora and fauna of the sanctuary.

Since the park became a Tiger Reserve, the population of tigers and other endangered species has increased significantly. According to recent surveys, the tiger population in the Kanha Tiger Reserve stands around 70-75, promising better opportunities for sighting tigers in their own habitat. Kanha National Park is also famous for endangered Barasinghas (Swamp Dear), which were on the verge of extinction but their number now stands over 400.


Kanha National ParkThe varied topography and a moderate climate support the growth of a diverse flora in Kanha National Park. About 70 species of trees are found in Kanha. The vegetation in the park chiefly comprises of Sal forests, large Bamboo stretches and the lush green meadows. The rich flora in the park supports a large variety of wildlife in Kanha National Park. According to surveys, Kanha is home to 22 species of large mammals and over 300 species of birds. The major wildlife attractions in Kanha National Park are Tigers, Leopards, Dholes (Indian wild dog), Indian Bisons, Sambar, Chital, Barasingha, Barking Deer, Black Buck, Chausingha, Nilgai, Monkeys, Mongoose, Mouse Deer, Sloth Bear, Jackal, Porcupine, Hyena, Jungle Cat, Hare, Rock Pythons among many others. The most commonly noticed birds in the park are Pea fowls, Storks, Pond Herons, Egrets, Peacock, Partridges, spotted Parakeets, Green Pigeons, Cuckoos, Drongos, Warblers, Kingfishers, Woodpeckers and fly catchers.

Elephant Safari : An enjoyable and exciting Elephant Safari is another major attraction in Kanha National Park. Exploring the natural beauty and wildlife of Kanha from top of an elephant's back would surely be a unique and rewarding experience for wildlife enthusiasts. Tourists can also visit the Kanha Museum, which is dedicated to tribal culture of Madhya Pradesh, depicting the attributes and activities of the park. Kanha also is a photographer's paradise, offering unlimited possibilities of capturing wildlife on your camera.

Tourist Places near Kanha National Park

Kawardha Palace :
Kawardha PalaceOnly three hours drive for the Resort, The Palace Kawardha was designed and built by Maharaja Dharamraj Singh in the period 1936-39. This inspiring monument was created using Italian marble and stone, and is set in eleven acres of private lush gardens. The magnificence of the domed and filigreed DURBAR HALL, along with the marble staircases and elegant sweeping verandhas , ( which surround all the suits ) and the high ceiling lounges are reminiscent of bygone eras. Other places of interest in and around Kawardha are The Krishna Temple, Bhoremdeo Temple, Mandawa Mahal & Madan Manjari Mahal. All date from the 11th century and can be found twenty minutes north of Kawardha.

Bandhavgarh National Park :
This is a small National Park, compact yet full of game. Owing to its small size, the density of tigers is the highest. Apart from Tigers there are around 22 species of mammals and another 250 species of birds are present.

Excursions :
Near Kanha National Park is Bamni Dadar visited by every tourist who comes to the national park. This place is also known as the sunset point. The Kanha National Park is at it scenic best at this point. The sunset from this spot is mesmerizing. The eminent natural splendor of the park comes to the fore here. The grazing sambhar, barking deer, gaurs, and other animals make the ambience magical.

Kawardha Palace Nagpur : The city of Nagpur is located at a distance of 260 kilometers from Kanha National Park. Famous for its oranges, Nagpur is nicknamed as the orange city. The present day Nagpur city was founded by the Gond King of Deogad, Bakht Buland Shah in the year 1702. The city completed its 300 years in the year 2002. Nagpur has a good network of transportation and is easily accessible from its nearby towns and cities.

Jabalpur : Jabalpur makes another important excursion point from Kanha National Park. Located at a distance of 145 kilometers via Mandla, Jabalpur is also an important base point to visit a number of important places in the region. Inside Jabalpur the Madan Mahal Fort built in AD 1116 and the Rani Durgavati Museum that houses a number of fine archaeological findings and sculptures of a bygone era are the two landmarks to visit. The Tilwara Ghat where the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi are believed to have been immersed also makes an important place to visit in Jabalpur. You can also access the Marble Rocks, Dhuandhar Falls and the Chausath Yogini Mandir from this place.


Best Time to Visit
Kanha National ParkOctober to June is the best time to visit Kanha National Park. The park is closed from July to Mid-October because of the monsoon season.

Madhya Pradesh Forest Department has decided that National park will re-open as per their previous schedule for tourists from 16th October, 2009 onwards!!

By Air : The nearest Airport to Kanha National Park is Nagpur (265 km), which is well connected by air to major cities of India.

By Rail : Jabalpur (165 km) and Nagpur (265 km) are the nearest Railheads from Kanha National Park.

By Road : Kanha National Park is well connected by road to major cities of Madhya Pradesh. The State Transport Buses regularly ply between Khatia Village (the western entrance to Kanha) to Mukki (30 km), Jabalpur (165 km), Nagpur (265 km) and Khajuraho (445 km).
