The Ranthambore National Park also known as the 'Ranthambore National Park' and the 'Ranthambore Tiger Reserve'- is rated among one of the finest tiger reserves in India. Located amidst the picturesque surroundings of the Aravalis and the Vindhya ranges in eastern Rajasthan, the Ranthambore National Park is known for its rich and varied flora and fauna. The park spreads over an area of approximately 400 sq km in a highly undulating and rugged terrain with numerous rocky ridges, hills and open valleys with lakes and pools. Two rivers, the Chambal and the Banas flowing in the South and the North of the park respectively. The Padam Talab, the Raj Bagh Talab and the Malik Talab are some of the lakes in the area, that attract the tiger population. The lush green vegetation along with plenty of water availability makes it an ideal place for survival and growth of varied wildlife. The park offers perfect conditions for tigers and their prey. The greatest attractions of the Ranthambore National Park are the world-famous Royal Bengal Tigers. Once the favorite hunting ground of the Maharaja of Jaipur, the Ranthambore National Park was declared a game sanctuary in 1955, a tiger reserve in 1973 under India's famous Project Tiger Plan and finally attained the status of a national park in 1980.
The Ranthambore National Park supports a wide variety of wildlife ranging from mammals to birds and reptiles. But, the most important wild animal of the Ranthambore National Park is the presence of significant population of Tigers, whose number is estimated between 30-40. Probably, the Ranthambore National Park is the only tiger reserve in India, which has seen a significant rise in number of tigers in recent times. The park promises to offer the best of opportunities to track a tiger in its own natural habitat and so it is a favorite with wildlife photographers. For a relatively small area, the park has a rich diversity of fauna and flora that include about 30 mammal species, 272 bird species, 12 reptile species and 350 plant species including 50 aquatic plants. Apart from the Royal Bengal Tigers, the other major wildlife at the Ranthambore National Park include Panthers, Chital, Sambar, Blackbuck, Chinkara, Leopard, Sloth Bear, Hyena, Jackal, Wild Boars, Mongoose, Nilgai, Gazelle, Bears, Indian Hare, Monitor Lizards and a large number of exotic and colorful birds. The Ranthambore National Park is also a heritage site, as it houses some important ruins, dotted all around the park. The 10th century Ranthambore Fort, from which the park derives its name, is probably the oldest existing fort in Rajasthan and a major tourist attraction in the park. In addition there are many lake palaces and 'chhatris', overlooking the park. Located at the foot of the fort is the lovely Jogi Mahal, another attraction inside the Ranthambore National Park. In this category come the Blue Bull or Nilgai, Caracal, Langur, Common Mongoose, Palm Civet or Toddy Cat, Common Yellow Bat, Desert Cat, Fivestriped Palm Squirrel, House Mouse, House Rat, Indian False Vampire, Indian Flying Fox, Indian Fox, Indian Gazelle or Chinkara, Indian Gerbil, Indian Mole Rat, Indian Porcupine, Indian Wild Boar, Jungle Cat, Leopard, Long-eared Hedgehog, Ratel, Rufoustailed Hare, Sambar, Sloth Bear, Small Indian Mongoose, Small Indian Civet, Spotted Dear or Chital, Striped Hyena and the Tiger. Some of the mammals such as Sambar, Chital, Sloth Bear, Wild Boar, Chinkara, Porcupines, Jackals, Leopard, Jungle Cat and Marsh Crocodile are easy to spot in the Ranthambore National Park. The lakes and water holes inside the Ranthambore National Park offer the best opportunities for sighting the wild animals. The park attracts thousands of wildlife lovers from all over the world and is a hot favorite with wildlife photographers. The Birds : The Ranthambore National Park also has a sizeable bird population, both resident and migratory. The park is home to about 272 species of birds; identified so far. It's difficult to name all of them here. The most important in the bird's list include Graylag Goose, Woodpeckers, Indian Gray Hornbills, Common Kingfishers, Bee Eaters, Cuckoos, Parakeets, Asian Palm Swift, Owl, Nightjars, Pigeon, Dove, Crakes, Snipes, Sandpipers, Gulls, Terns, Great Crested Grebe, Eagles, Darters, Cormorants, Egrets, Herons, Bitterns, Flamingos, Ibis, Pelicans, Storks, Pittas, Shrikes, Treepies, Crows, Orioles, Cuckoo-Shrikes, Minivets, Drongos, Flycatchers, Ioras, Wood-Shrikes, Sparrows, Finches, Wagtails, Pipits, Bayas, Munias, Bulbul, Mynas, Falcons etc.
The Reptiles : There are about 12 species of reptiles in the Ranthambore National Park. In the reptiles list include Banded Krait, Common Krait, Cobra, Freshwater or Swamp Crocodile, Ganga Soft-shelled Turtle, Indian Python, North Indian Flap-shelled Turtle, Rat Snake, Russell's Viper, Saw-scaled Viper, the Desert Monitor Lizard and the Indian Chameleon. In addition, there are a wide variety of fishes in the numerous water-bodies in the Ranthambore National Park.
